Bryan Burton

Southern Utah University
Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice
Bryan R. Burton is an Assistant Professor in the Southern Utah University Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice. Professor Burton holds two degrees from the University of California, Irvine. He earned his B.A. in Social Ecology, summa cum laude, in 2008. Professor Burton earned his Ph.D. in Criminology, Law & Society in 2016. Bryan teaches several courses at SUU, including criminological theory, white-collar crime, classics in crime cinema, juvenile justice and comparative criminal justice systems.

He has a strong commitment to research and teaching, particularly in the area of white-collar crime. He conducted research that examines the role of law enforcement in healthcare. Professor Burton’s interest stems from his one-year internship as an investigator with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). He co-authored two journal articles that examine the use of claims data (billings) in healthcare studies. He is particularly interested in how fraudulent billings undermine the reliability and validity of studies that use such data to study healthcare delivery and policy issues. He is currently preparing a third manuscript that looks at how claims data can be used to detect healthcare fraud and abuse. Bryan’s interest in white-collar crime is not limited to healthcare. He has also published four manuscripts on white-collar crime that appeared in edited books and encyclopedias. He has also given presentations on his research at national and international criminology conferences.
